6^th Annual Concert for a Cure returns to Seacoast Science Center

2010 concert to feature Adam Ezra Group & Mighty Mystic and the Strings of Thunder

Portsmouth, NH – July 7, 2010 –This year's Seacoast Concert for a Cure, an annual music festival that raises funds for breast cancer survivor support, will feature a unique lineup of national musicians with local roots. The event, to be held August 5, 2010, at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH, will feature the internationally-acclaimed band The Adam Ezra Group plus reggae stars Mighty Mystic and the Strings of Thunder.

"There's nothing like dancing the night away while overlooking the sunset on the ocean," said concert co-founder Katie Delahaye Paine. "All while helping raise funds for organizations that help cancer survivors."

Since the event began in 2005, Seacoast Concerts for a Cure have raised more than $80,000 to help dozens of people by supporting local non-profit organizations who provide much needed and valued support to breast cancer patients and their family members. Past events have provided funding for: mammograms to those who can't afford them; support weekends for survivors and children of those affected by cancer; the creation of the web site BreastCancerStories.org, where women can share their stories and get support on line; as well as Dana Farber's Survivorship Program – a program that helps more and more people survive cancer every year.

Last year's concert raised over $15,000 for local breast cancer support programs. This year's money raised by the event will help the following organizations:

• Betty J. Borry Breast Cancer Retreats which provide adventure retreat weekends for women living after breast cancer.
• On Belay, a local non-profit that supports children of those suffering from cancer or other life-threatening diseases,. The organization was started by concert founder and New Hampshire Volunteer of the Year, Crescentia Healy True, who sadly lost her battle with breast cancer in 2006.
• BreastCancerStories.org and their new My Breast Cancer Support program, providing travel scholarships, non-medical grants, home assistance and additional support for local patients and their family members.

This year, attendees will also have a chance to bid on and win raffle and silent auction items including two tickets to The Colbert Report, a cruise on Lake Winnipesauke as well as several getaway vacation packages and two tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies.

Once again, Seacoast Science Center will host the event, continuing its Thursday night series for an extra week. Other sponsors of this year's event include: Appledore Engineering, Wentworth Marina, and other local businesses that are donating their time and services.

Breast Cancer Treatment Takes Less Time - Health News Story - WMUR Manchester

EXETER, N.H. -- A new treatment is available for women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer that doctors say is safe, effective and quick.Link: Exeter HospitalPatient Margaret Sklarski said her diagnosis of breast cancer hit her hard."Everything was frightening," she said.But her doctors at Exeter Hospital told her of a new radiation therapy that can be done in a fraction of the time of normal therapy -- five days, as opposed to seven weeks."They will start with a regimen of five days as opposed to six to seven weeks," said Dr. Gary Proulx, director of radiation oncology. "It's twice a day with a minimum of six hours in between. It works out much better for women who have a difficult time coming in for six to seven weeks."To qualify for electronic brachytherapy, patients must meet specific criteria."Only patients who have localized disease within the surgical site, so you trust it is just that site," Proulx said. "You can be confident treating just that site."Once the patient gets the green light, doctors surgically remove the cancer and then prepare the site for radiation. CAT scan images ensure they get the precise location."They insert a catheter and the radiation goes into the catheter," Sklarski said. "It keeps it in a specific area so it doesn't do any damage to a bigger area."Low-dose radiation targets just the cancer. The dose is so low that it's safe for visitors to be present."With this type of radiation, they can stay in the room with you so you're not in here by yourself," Sklarski said.Exeter Hospital said it is the only hospital in the state to currently offer the treatment."We go beyond science," said Dr. Diane Palladino. "We look at the whole patient, what's going on with them, and the hospital is committed to a multidimensional approach.""This helps you get back to your life and move on," Sklarski said. "I'm a survivor, and if this is what will get me there, that's what I want."Sklarski's entire treatment, from surgery to radiation, took just more than six weeks.
