Whether you're pleased or not with the results of the recent U.S. elections, you've got to be thrilled at the landslide victory of Nate Silver and his FiveThirtyEight blog. Mr. Silver, The New York Times' polling guru and author of just-released "The Signal and the Noise," used canny aggregation of polling data to achieve uncannily accurate predictions. Moreover, he stuck to his guns in the face of withering doubt and criticism from conservative pundits. As the Harvard College Sports Analysis Collective says: "Silver appears to have ushered in a new level of credibility for statistical analysis in politics." See that article for an analysis of his methods. There's a good summary at The Week, see also Business Insider. And if you doubt that statisticians are sexy, see "Nate Silver, Sex Object." --Bill Paarlberg, Editor (A big, big, big, thanks to Harvard College Sports Analysis Collective for the image.)
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many… Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders... But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
