Bill - great question last Thursday (although it did seem a bit awkward at first...the first moment of silence from that panel!), and a nice post here, too. I agree that conversation isn't the ultimate or only measure, as noted by comments. I agree that for the vast majority of blog readers, they really are looking for helpful information as opposed to engaging in a conversation.

That's why I think links really do matter, mainly because they are a validation that someone has found value in what you've written and wants to share it with others. So yes, that's kind of an ego stroke, too. I even had someone request to reprint one of of my posts in a tree-based newsletter.

I see blogs as a way to publish and share information (and opinion) for free, and if other find it useful and link to it, so much the better. If a post is well-written, it may not get comments within it, but may instead just have external links.

The more inflammatory you are in blog posts, the more likely you are to have comments. But those comments might be more of the Crossfire or Hannity and Colmes variety (people shouting and talking past each other), than they are of the reasoned discourse variety.

Thanks for your comment Bill, I think it opened up a great (and much needed) conversation about this issue.

I recently discovered your blog (via google alerts) and love it! In fact, I recently listed it it in a post " Our Women Bloggers List Grows" on one of my blogs Virtual Woman's Day (http://www.virtualwomansday.com).

Wishing you all the best and continued success.
