And you thought PR research was boring

  • Miami_001
Live, from poolside in Miami -- its the International Public Relations Research Conference! Most of the luminaries in public relations research will be sharing their most recent results over the next few days. At night the talk about ways to evaluate our work continues with the creativity of the metrics increasing in direct correlation with the amount of alcohol consumed.

How to turn a lifelong fan into permanent skeptic

As most people who know me are well aware, I drank the HP Kool-Aid years ago when I was part of the team that launched the LaserJet, ThinkJet and HP portable. I've worked for HP and on HP projects for years. I love HP products and have bought them faithfully ever since, owning dozens of printers, laptops and handhelds. Because of that loyalty, I purchased a Pavilioin dv6000 a year and a half ago. It was beautiful, it screamed and I loved it. Then it started to break down. First the battery jammed, little things didn't work properly and the operating system was unstablet. Then the hard drive failed, then the wireless modem failed, then the speakers stopped working. Now the wireless modem has failed again. Granted, there was probably alot of turmoil going on at HP at the time this particular unit was made, so I got a bad one. But don't just send me a badly worded IM saying that the unit is out of warrantee.   It's like ending a marriage via email. Guaranteed to end all future hope of reconciliation.

The dv6000 has "known issues" with the mother board that relates to the wireless modem issues...its all over their support forums and all over other forums such as CNET. Some people at HP admit it, some deny it. They have extended the warranty and have replaced many units but its hit or miss.

My son has a DV2315NR (or should I say HP has it) with all the same problems, they sent it back un-repaired and now say they don't have the part. Meanwhile, my son has not had his computer since December and it has definitely effected his school work.

The people at HP are arrogant and rude and incompetent.

I am buying him a MACBook.

How ironic. I had a very similar experience with Dell Computers. At the time, you were writing this post, I was posting an interview with Michael Dell that rejuvenates my lost faith in the company. BTW, this note is posted from my MacBook. Like everyone else, I am ecstatic with it. It's not the hardware. It's OSX.

KD - Interesting. You're not the first person I've heard from this week who has become disillusioned with HP because of poor quality and non customer care.
