Okay measurement mavens, where's your competitive spirit?

I know that most of the readers of this blog are to some degree or other, measurement mavens, and many of you have some pretty sophisticated programs in place. So why not enter them into the Jack Felton Golden Ruler of Measurement Award competition? It is the most prestigious award for measurement on the planet, and the Institute for PR is still looking for entries. Get all the details here:

I stumbled across the SureWoman blog because the blogger behind it commented on one of my Berlin, NH comments. Turns out she's another local. Now she's done a really nice thing and featured my story on the blog. You can read it here.

Everything you wanted to know about measurement coming to NYC next Friday

I'll be giving my Measurement 101 workshop on how to measure just about everything and get the data you need to make better decisions in NYC next Friday from 9-5 at PRSA on 33 Maiden Lane. So, if you've ever wanted to go beyond the one hour of "Seven Steps to a Perfect Measurement System" this would be the opportunity.

More proof that Berlin, NH is the place to be.

Came across this great blog, SureWoman written by a woman from Berlin, NH -- the soon-to-be center for social media. Why blog in a place where there's smog and traffic? when you can blog with a view of the White Mountains and the Androscoggin Valley? And small town New Hampshire really is the perfect place for social media. There's always an endless supply of stories.

Trying to explain social media

I'm obviously a dreadful communicator, since people are always telling me "I don't really understand what you do." The simple answer is research and measurement  but then you throw in "social media"  and the eyes begin to glaze over. .. I have, however, figured out a  way to explain the revolution that social media is bringing to marketing. I was running the other day and ran by a sign on a lawn on a busy street that said "Will Mow Your Lawn"  call - 617-123-4567. 
This is the consummate example of 20th century marketing.
The sign might be seen by 50,000 people a day but the vast majority of them have lawns that are already mowed, are moving to fast to write down the phone number and live to far away to make it profitable.
A good 21st century marketer would make 100 copies of the sign and drive around the neighborhood looking for homes with overgrown lawns and place the sign on their lawn and wait for the phone calls to come in.

Wish I knew if this report was good or bad all I know is that it is incomplete

Social target just released its "Guide to Social Media Analysis" which for $500 should be really good. Of course I don't know since they haven't provided me a copy nor have they provided one to The Measurement Standard and I'm not about to spend that much money to read what has to be a flawed comparison given the 31 vendors they report on. Anyone that compares Cyberalert to Cymfony is obviously new to the business or smoking something really good. But the real flaw, is that they managed to exclude KDPaine & Partners - the only firm that has been measuring social me/consumer generated media for over 10 years. Am I annoyed, oh yeah.

What is it that we do?

Next time I'm trying to explain what it is that we do over here at KDPaine & Partners, I'm going to make them read this article on marketing measurement in The Hartford Courant. Yes, the Hartford Courant. Seldom do we see MSM writers take the time to sufficiently explain the challenges of marketing measurement, but these guys got it all -- the impact on business, employees, the cost implications. .. nice job!

More evidence of not getting it..

Here's an even scarier one from the fashion world. Not only do they not get it that you're having a conversation not "pictching" but their recommendations are flat out wrong, and their measurement is even more clueless.
